Index Admission / ReAdmission

While reading up on Resource Use Performance Category I had to get some clarification on the two types of admissions for understanding the scoring under Medicare Spending Per Beneficiary.

Index Admission: An index admission is an admission in a hospital with a principal diagnosis of a specified condition that meets the inclusion and exclusion criteria for that measure.

ReAdmission: If a patient has one or more additional admissions for the given condition (heart attack, heart failure or penumonia) within 30 days of discharge from an index admission then that admission is not considered as an index admission. That is considered as a Re-Admission.

An admission can be an index admission or a readmission. It cannot be both.
